When I was in the 8th grade, I started teaching baton
twirling on Saturdays charging $1.50 for a half hour lesson
which equated to 3.00 an hour. In the 50's, that was a
good
fee.
One day, I decided to change my strategy a bit and set up
classes of 15 girls each for an hour and charge them $1.00
per hour since they had to share their learning with others,
they got to pay less. We all won because they ended up
with the same value if not more and I now was up to $15.00
an hour.
It was 25 years later when I realized how well I was doing
back there in the 8th grade. I told my story to a former
principal of a school who now was a distributor in my
Inscape Publishing organization.
She asked me a significant question. "Did you ever
realize
how well you were doing back then?" I asked,
"What do
you mean?"
She said, "You were making more money teaching baton
part time than the school teachers were making teaching
school full time. I wondered how that was possible
because
I was only teaching Wednesday night after school and all
day Saturday. They were teaching full time 5 days a week
and grading papers etc. after hours.
Be that as it may, she was right. I was making more than
the teachers but I never knew it then because that wasn't
important to me. I was simply doing what I loved to do.
I loved to teach people how to do something they wanted to
accomplish and if they really wanted to learn, I was on top of
the world because I was helping them get from where they
were to where they wanted to be. What a bonus! It
was fun!
Well, some things never change. Today, 23 years after I
set
up the same kind of a strategy professionally, I realize
that I
am doing it all over again in a professional environment.
I
am making more money, working less because I have a
strategy that is a multiple.
Where are the multiples in your strategies to generate a
profit in your business? As a speaker, trainer,
consultant or
coach, you can trade time for dollars if you want to and you
are always dependent on what you do. That is a
significant
way to limit your profits.
You want to ask yourself two basic questions: how can a
build a business that is equity rather than just a business
and how can I multiply myself?
The easiest way for me to teach you the concept in just this
one article is to share with you exactly what I do.
There are 3 ways I concentrate on generating profits in the
human resource business. They are:
1) I contract with organizations, corporations, small
businesses and consultants to train their people primarily in
the area of Enhancing Communications. There are a
variety
of topics that I have trained on through the years, but what I
enjoy the most is communications using the power of the
DiSC Model of Communications.
In this contractual arrangement, I get paid my half day or
whole day fees plus cost of materials plus travel expenses
etc. if travel is necessary
2) I have a network of retail customers that are
trainers
themselves and I simply sell them product to use in their in-
house training. They call me up, order the materials and
I
ship them out. I coach them on how to do the training to
have the greatest impact, but my role there is even minimal
because I have Facilitator Kits that are professionally done
for every self-assessment tool we have in our product line.
They have camera-ready overhead transparencies or power
point presentations ready to go. We even have the
masters
for participant's materials that are reproducible. Make as many as you need at no charge.
Trainers love all of what I have described because they love
to train to save their company money by not hiring me and
they have all the materials available to them to do a
professional presentation with their people.
3) I have created a network organization of about 2000
independent entrepreneurs that markets the materials that
we have available and promote their business with this 3-
step process and duplicate themselves all the way around
the same as I do if they choose to do so. Some do and
some don't---that is a personal choice and I respect either
choice they make because different people have different
needs.
It is a wonderful place to be where you can do whatever you
want to do whenever you want to do it and have the freedom
to set up your own schedule according to the way you like it
best.
I have always felt that if you were doing what you want to do
rather than what you have to do, you were more on vacation
than at work.
I think James Michener says it best: "The master in
the art
of living makes little distinction between his work and his
play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his
information and his recreation, his life and his religion.
She
hardly knows which is which, she simply pursues her
vision
of excellence at whatever she does, leaving others to decide
whether she is working or playing. To him or her, they
are
always doing both."
Now, we mentioned equity. Net bottom line is that is
when
you set all these things in motion and build a business that
can be sold someday, you have built more than just a
business. You will have equity that can be sold because
your business is not just you.
So, how about it, would you like to join me to help you build
your business? Just let me know. . . .I am really easy
to
work with because I believe in freedom. Do you?
Wishing You the Very Best!
